NanoMaterials & Surfaces @ BioInterfaces

    Souhir Boujday

    Expertise

My research topics evolve around the surface reactivity of materials and nanomaterials for biological applications. I have founded and am leading the “Nanomaterials and Surfaces at the BioInterfaces” group (NanoBioSurf). We explore the synthesis and functionalization of metallic and oxidized surfaces with a molecular approach. This includes an in-depth characterization of each elemental step as well as an unravelling of the mechanisms involved. We rely on a set of surface-specific techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface infrared spectroscopies, surface plasmon resonance and quartz crystal microbalance. A significant part of my current research effort focuses on the engineering of plasmonic nanostructures with different compositions and shapes, in order to fine-tune the position of the plasmon band. I investigate the coating of these nanostructures by silica layers with mastered thickness and porosity and their (bio)functionalization for application in biosensing and nanomedicine.

My academic teaching activities cover the first year of the bachelor's degree, where I design pedagogical tools for dynamic and/or autonomous student learning, and the master's degree, where I promote multidisciplinarity and internationalization, mainly in materials chemistry. I have created and am currently responsible for teaching modules on material surfaces and their reactivity at the interface, as well as on nanomaterials for biological applications.
